I was at the Chingay Parade Singapore yesterday Friday 11 2011. We were seated at the podium facing the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands. It was officially opened by Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong. I couldn’t hear his speech because the level of noise from Harley Davidson bikers which are parked right infront of our stand was deafening. Behind them were the Vintage Cars and then there were just that even more noise coming from firecrackers all along the stretch of road used for the Formula 1 racing.
The master of ceremony at our sector cheered us on to raise our red ‘poms poms’ in the air. Everyone was on their feet, hoping to catch a glimpse of the entire parade even though they knew they would all come pass anyway. At the green sector, which was were the VIPs were seated, was more than 100 metres away from us. We could see two giant sized Dragon floats, glittering so brightly as it was made of the shiny materials that reflect light. They were bright orange in colour. I could almost imagine this Chinese Dragon taking flight with Harry Potter on its back. Now what would that be like?
When the parade finally started, we couldn’t contain our excitement anymore. We cheered, clapped and shouted to one another to check out what was close and beyond.
The spirit of community from all walks of lives regardless of race or religion is finally captured in this one event, which has been running for the past 40 years! It is dubbed Asia’s largest community parade in the world. Wah?!
I did not have my camera with me. So I had to make do with my iPhone 3GS.
